Feminist foreign policy

Gender justice, overcoming discrimination and violence

There is no single, worldwide definition of feminist foreign policy. However, all the different practices of feminist foreign policy are based on the common understanding that human rights, gender justice, and overcoming international power relations are prerequisites for peace.

In Germany in 2023, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock presented the Guidelines for Feminist Foreign Policy. This new approach to German foreign policy can improve the lives of women in war and crisis areas. However, for this to happen it needs to become active political practice and needs to be based on the following principles:

  1. Critiquing power: Recognising and overcoming the existing power inequalities between the genders
  2. Intersectionality
  3. Human rights
  4. Survivors as the focus
  5. Protecting the right to physical self-determination
  6. Sustainable and impact-oriented implementation
  7. Interlocking policy measures
